SurvialIn any war torn country, survival is hard. Throughout the novel, Parvana we follow their family's struggle with surviving among the Taliban. Most everyday activities are made illegal for women, they are even banned from stepping outside their own house, which makes things even harder for the family. When Parvana's father is taken away, it takes much skill from the family just to reach their basic needs. Their survival rate improves as the reader gets deeper into the novel.
DiscriminationThe entire novel is based around the discrimination against women. The book displays the various ways how women and men are treated differently. The family struggles when the ladies are left to run the household. Women and girls aren't allowed to leave their house, let alone have a job. None of these events would have happened if different classes of people would have been treated equality. Father was taken away, simply because he was educated overseas. In a equal society not one person would be arrested for such a normal trait. This was discrimination against their own country's citizens and people. "Young women were sometimes stolen by soldiers. They were snatched from their homes, and their families never saw them again. " |
DeterminationNot only did Parvana show determination in all of her different jobs, but she influenced everyone else around her. When her family was at their darkest point, she demonstrated how to persevere and later her family did the same. Mrs. Weera was a strong believer in determination. As soon as Mrs. Weera is introduced into the novel, the reader is automatically aware, she is one for taking charge and being very determined in everything she does.
"Malali wouldn't be afraid, Parvana knew. Malali would form an army and lead it in a storming of the prison." WarParvana is set in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has a long history with wars. The exact war Parvana was set in, began in the early 2000s, led by the Taliban. The Taliban set ridiculous rules, in order for them to rule for a longer period. They blackmailed and overruled any opportunity that may lose them their power. The Taliban slowly took over different states and countries in the Middle East. All events in the novel are determined by the Taliban, therefore caused by war. Parvana being set in this time, all problems either involved or were caused by the Taliban.
